WARDROBE BREAKDOWN
This two-day seminar will teach the fundamentals of breaking down costumes for film and theater production. From affecting an “aged” took, to a post explosion look, you will also learn about storage, SPFX products, Fast Track breakdowns and more. This course will also cover Hazardous Vx. Non-Hazardous or "green" breakdown supplies.
This seminar will ideal for people who work in either TV/Film or Theatre productions, as many of the techniques are transferable. However the focus on this seminar will be on wardrobe breakdown for Film and TV.
All participants are to bring an old tee-shirt and pair of jeans to be used in the breakdown practices. All other supplies will be provided by NFVIA. Register by calling 456-2978 or send an email to info@nfvia.com.

Derek Baskerville Biography
Derek began his professional career in design after completing a practicum at Ottawa’s National Arts Centre. Early employers included several of Ontario’s premiere Theatre companies; The Shaw Festival, The Canadian Opera Company and the Stratford Festival.
Derek transition to Film and Television began as an Assistant Designer on the Iconic Canadian Classic, “Anne of Green Gables”. Some of Derek’s favourite projects include; Margaret Lawerence’s “The Diviners”, (Gemini Award-Best Costume Design) Margaret Atwood’s “Betty”, (Gemini Nominee, Best Costume Design) The P.B.S. Mini-Series “African Journey”, (shot on location in Zimbabwe) and his designs for the cult favourite, H.B.O./C.B.C. “The Kids in the Hall”. Other career highlights include Fox Networks “Dark Angel”, Disney Channels’ “So Weird” and Credo Productions’ “For Those Who Hunt the Wounded Down”. On a whim Derek traveled to Vancouver to be a personal costumer For Robin William’s on the film “Jumanji” and subsequently spent 12 years traveling the world on Mr. Williams’ projects.
Recently Mr. Baskerville was the recipient of a Leo Award for Best Costume Design, for the multi-award winning (7 in total) film The Anachronism. Derek brings his knowledge from several years as a guest lecturer at the Blanche MacDonald Fashion Design School, Capillano University, the Costume Society of Ontario and The Association of Canadian Film Craftspersons
NFVIA GRIP & LIGHTING COURSES
ADVANCED LIGHTING
Advanced lighting is designed as an introduction to
the role of Cinematographer. This course will cover the
responsibilities and approaches of the Director of Photography and how
he/she designs and achieves the look of a film. With a class room
session snd practical session the students will learn advanced lighting
techniques and how the DOP and their crew implement them.

INTRODUCTION TO LIGHTING
Introduction to Lighting for Film and TV is a one day course designed for beginners and aspiring film makers. This course will cover the basics of electricity, types of lighting fixtures, and lighting techniques and style. With both a classroom session and practical session students will learn lighting prinicples and have a chance to apply them in a hands on environment.

ON SET LIGHTING
On Set Lighting is designed for people who are interested in working in the Film and TV industry. This course will act as an introduction to the professional film world. With an emphasis on the jobs of the Lighting Technician and Company Grip, this course will cover job requirements, equipment used on sets, the hierarchy of departments, and introduce lighting techniques used on professional sets. With two classroom sessions and a practical session, students will learn how the Camera, Electrical and Grip departments work together to get movies made.

Neil Macdonald Biography
Born and raised in Whitehorse, Neil became involved in Theatre and Film at a young age. Neil went on to study Theatre and Film at the University of British Columbia, graduating with a BA in Film Production. After UBC Neil started working in the Vancouver Film and TV industry, becoming a member of IATSE Local 891. Neil has worked on a variety of Productions in the Camera and Lighting Departments. Neil’s work as a Cinematographer has been seen at Film Festivals around the world and on TV. Recently Neil was nominated for Excellence in Cinematography in a Short Drama for The Anachronism at the 2009 Leo Awards (Motion Picture Arts & Sciences Foundation of British Columbia).
All courses will have practical elements incorporated, so all students will have a chance to work with Grip and Lighting gear, either to gain employment in the film industry or to improve the production value of their own film or video projects. All courses have been developed for NFVIA and will be run again in the future.
